The brief
The Mill is an 18th century mill building in Derby city centre, converted by David Hall Architects into a multi-tenant office space. The building needed a brand identity and a wayfinding system that would help tenants and visitors navigate the space clearly while respecting the character of the architecture.
The thinking
We took the shape of the building itself as the starting point, dividing it into sections with each one representing a floor. A single accent colour was assigned to each level, giving occupants and visitors an immediate visual reference for where they are in the building. We drew on proven wayfinding solutions including the New York transit subway system for inspiration. We designed all internal and external signage and worked with our strategic partner to ensure everything was produced and installed to our standards.
The outcome
The building has a clear, functional wayfinding system and a brand identity that sits comfortably within the architect’s aesthetic. Tenants and visitors can navigate the space without confusion, and the visual language gives the building a presence of its own.
